14. William Burden

My great grandfather, William Burden was born to Grace (Gorrell) and Daniel Burden 22 October 1849 in or near Troy, New York. Sometime 1857-1858 his parents moved the family to Hendricks County, Indiana. After William's marriage and probably in 1872 or early 1873, three young couples (William and his young bride, his brother John and his wife, and his brother-in-law William H. Jelf), along with William's brother Daniel, set out by oxen wagon for the Roundmound neighborhood north east of Cedar Vale, Chautauqua County, Kansas.

William along with Linn Casebolt founded and built the Roundmound Church, which at times was known as William Burden's chapel. The Burden family had a history of building Methodist churches doing both design and carpentry. I have been in a church they built in Indiana.

William died 2 Sept 1917 and, like Linn Casebolt, is buried in the Roundmound Cemetery they created beside their church. The church has been torn down. Last time I was there only the cement front steps remained.
