His gravestone in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Knox County Missouri says my great great great grandfather, Matthew Campbell was born 17 September 1784 and died on 11 February 1865. An ancient cousin who joined the DAR (Ap #102119)on 19 April 1913, said that he was born in Pennsylvania, whereas his 1850 US census entry said he was born in Maryland as do the 1880 census entries for 3 of his children. However his 1860 entry said he was born in Kentucky as do the 1880 census entries for 2 of his children. There is no documentary evidence that I know of which says where he was born, but the available indications are that the DAR application is in error on that point.

Most sources, that I have seen, say his parents were Jane (Harvey) and William Campbell. The 1850 and 1860 censuses indicate he was a farmer.

Matthew married in Harrison County, Kentucky on 20 February 1817. He and his wife sold land there in June 1821. They are said to have moved in 1826 to Decatur County, Indiana, and then in the fall of 1847 to Knox County, Kentucky. Martin died there on 11 February 1865.
